Summer Clerkship Programme

You will be based in our office, on Auckland’s North Shore. Throughout the programme, you will gain valuable experience and be exposed to many learning opportunities as you rotate through the firm's three areas of expertise – Trusts, Commercial and Property. From the outset, you’ll be involved in a diverse range of work and have the opportunity to participate in client meetings.

We foster a supportive and collaborative work environment. As you rotate through teams, you’ll receive mentorship from experienced solicitors and dedicated support from the director who oversees the programme.

This clerkship will enhance your legal skills, deepen your knowledge, and support your academic growth. It may also open the door to future opportunities with us as you embark on your legal career.

All applicants will be required to email documentation to us before the closing date. We will then hold interviews in late April to early May. Offers will then be made from 19^th May 2025.

SUMMER CLERK, DAVENPORTS LAW

What drew you to this law firm for your summer clerkship?

I was immediately drawn to the warm and inviting ambiance of the firm, which I was instantly able to capture. It was clear to me that this is a place where individuals are supported and valued. I knew I had chosen the perfect place to transition from being a law student to gaining practical, hands-on experience.

What types of tasks and projects have you worked on?

From the very first day of my summer clerkship, I was immediately exposed to practical legal work. I had the chance to rotate through the commercial, trust, and property teams, tackling a variety of matters within each group. Whether it was drafting leases, preparing wills, or conducting title reviews, every task gave me valuable hands-on experience and a real sense of what it’s like to work in the legal world.

How would you describe the firm’s culture and work environment?

I feel incredibly fortunate to have started my legal journey with such a welcoming and supportive team. At Davenports, everyone goes out of their way to help each other and it feels like a close-knit family more than just a workplace. The collaborative and inclusive culture here has been a huge confidence booster for me as a student and has made it easy to ask questions and learn from those around me.

Did you feel supported by your mentors or supervisors?

I felt incredibly supported by all the mentors I have had at Davenports. We have amazing senior lawyers with a wealth of experience that I was fortunate to learn from. Everyone at the firm is approachable and always happy to help, no matter the time or question.

What skills have you gained or improved during this clerkship?

I have improved my drafting skills, learnt how to communicate effectively with clients and developed a deeper understanding of how to apply legal knowledge in practical, real-world scenarios.

Would you consider working at this firm in the future? Why or why not?
